BOOKS ARRIVE!

LOOKING BACKWARD: Patrick was a wonderful student and school community member through his years at the middle school, and I was lucky enough to have him as an English student in 8th grade. He was a 6th grader during my sabbatical when I was in the Mississippi Delta, noted on the map above. I set up a letter and video exchange between the 6th graders from Richmond and those from Friars Point Elementary School. Here is a sampling of Patrick and peers from both schools in the fall of 2000. Jody Horan

PROJECT ASRI

Webb's vision is now a reality: PROJECT ASRI combines health care, conservation, environmental education and medical training in Sukadana, Indonesia."Saving Forests ~ Saving Lives" is the motto under the Health in Harmony logo, and it explains its mission. The ASRI Klinik is providing affordable health care and training local health workers; Health in Harmony is in the midst of its biggest fundraising challenge to build a new hospital with more sophisticated facilities. Local families are learning how farm organically, using manure to build the soil and increase yields and sustain their families; both children and adults are learning about the importance rainforests and reforestation is now appreciated and practiced; widows can apply for a goat to give them a way to build a sustainable business, trading milk and manure or even a kid goat for health care and daily needs. teach them sustainable agriculture so they can feed their families, and educate the children about the beauty and interconnectedness of the forest and the world. .

AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL
DEVELOPING NEW OPPORTUNITIES

KLINIK ASRI No one is turned away and people can pay for their care in any way possible - working for the clinic itself or the community as a whole: learning to farm organically and save or even sell manure from goats or other animals.

ASRI workers are helping villagers understand the damage done by illegal logging and the "slash and burn" techniques. They are teaching the value of rebuilding the depleted soil with organic agriculture methods and replanting areas as funding allows.

NEW HOSPITAL Health in Harmony is seeking funds to build a larger and better equipped hospital to extend medical possibilities for the communities around the forest.

DONATION PAGE Check out the specific needs for these and other projects. CHC decided to support a new summer education program for children to learn about the rainforest as well as the other areas noted in these projects and we were able to donate $800 toward next summer.

GOATS FOR WIDOWS A special program for widowed and destitute women is particularly imaginative and proving to be very successful: a single goat will provide one widow with milk and manure for a small garden. As the goat delivers offspring, the woman can pay ASRI back with one of the "kids" and then expand her herd to support her family.

CHC CHOICE ~ ASRI KIDS

The goal of the ASRI Kids program to educate local children about forest protection, technology, and provide the opportunity to visit un-logged, amazing rainforest and see the orangutans up close along with so many other species.
